DURING SPECIFIC GRAVITY

DO's Don'ts
Hold the hydrometer vertically.

Draw electrolyte into the hydrometer a few times.

Hold the hydrometer so that the liquid is
level in the barrel and at eye level.

Read the Specific Gravity at the point on the
Calibrated float's scale where the surface of
     the liquid crosses the float.

Check each individual battery cell.

Measure the electrolyte temperature with
     a thermometer for best accuracy.

Correcting Hydrometer reading for Temperature:
     Add 0.007 for every 10oC above 27oC
     Subtract 0.007 for every 10oc below 27oC

Please note that the Hydrometer readings are likely      to be inaccurate in the following instances:

Immediately after Adding Water
(Never add acid to a battery to raise the electrolyte        level, Only add de-mineralized water)

While a Battery is being charged
(After turning the charge OFF, wait at least 15-20        minutes for the electrolyte to settle.)

Following Discharge
(Wait at least 15-20 minutes after discharging for the      electrolyte to settle)

INSTALLATION OF BATTERY IN THE VEHICLE:

Turn OFF Engine and take out the key.

Mark the Positive Cable to remember the proper connection.

Remove the Ground / Negative (-) cable first.

Use Proper tools to avoid damaging cable clamp bolt heads.

Remove the Battery and Clean corrosion/dirt from the Battery Tray and Battery Hold-down Bracket. Ensure that the
Battery Tray is free of rocks or other foreign materials.

Verify that the Negative / Ground cables Are properly grounded to the frame / Engine block.

Place the Battery in the battery tray properly (The Positive post of the automotive batteries is tapered and has a
slightly larger diameter).

Connect the Positive cable to the positive terminal of the battery first. The "Ground / Negative (-)" cable should be
connected to the battery last.

Apply Vaseline or Petroleum jelly for the battery terminal posts.

Check and Verify for the correct charging voltage (When replacing a battery, always verify that the charging-system
voltage is correct before the vehicle leaves the shop).

THE 3-STEP BATTERY CHECK :

STEP1: VISUAL INSPECTION

Check Container, Cover and Terminal for damage.

Clean corrosion if present.

Check electrolyte level and fill if necessary with De-mineralized water.

Check for electrolyte discoloration.

STEP2: STATE OF CHARGE

Use proper tools to remove vent caps, check with hydrometer.

If less than 50 Specific Gravity points difference between highest and lowest cells, proceed to next step.'Or'

If more than 50 Specific Gravity points difference and the battery is 75% charged or above, replace battery.

Remove surface charge, if battery has been on charge (Charger or Alternator) immediately before testing or if
OCV (Open-circuit voltage) is not consistent with specific gravity readings.

To remove surface charge, switch on headlights for 30-60 seconds (With Engine off condition). 'Or' Allow battery to
sit for 2-3 hours.

STEP3: LOAD TEST

Apply ½ the CCA rating of the battery for 15 secondsand compare resulting battery voltage (before removing load)
to voltage chart.

If unable to find CCA rating for battery, refer to manufacturer literature.

HYDROMETER

100% =1.270-1.280
75% =1.230-1.240
Recharge, if one or more Cells are below 1.230

VOLTMETER

OC VOLTS=STATE OF CHARGE
12.66 = 100%
12.40 = 75%
Recharge if O.C.V. is below 12.40 volts

USER GUIDELINES:

The top of the battery must be kept clean and dry.

Vaseline should be applied to cable clamps and terminals. Never apply grease.

Get the fan belt, electrical wiring, alternator and regulator setting checked regularly.

The alternator charging voltage setting measured across battery terminals must be maintained at 14.00±0.20.

In case of any drop in electrolyte level, add demineralised water. Never add acid.

CAUTION :

Keep away from sparks, cigarettes and open flame. These can cause explosion.

Avoid metallic contact across the terminals, as this can result in short circuit and sparking.

It is recommended to return the old battery to the authorized battery manufacturer / dealer / smelter during
purchase of a new battery.
